The Organisation
Timaru District Council aims to enable democratic local decision-making and action by, and on behalf of communities, to promote the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of its communities in the present and for the future. With around 400 employees, there are a diverse range of roles from community facing to support and technical specialists.
The Role / Person
With a focus on putting safety first and being better than yesterday, we are on the lookout for an individual who is passionate and experienced in making sure our whole team gets to go home safe at the end of each day.
By nature, Councils have a huge range of risks, from heavy machinery to dog bites and hazards associated with working around construction sites to working in the natural environment. In this newly established role, the Health and Safety Manager will provide leadership, influence and guidance in all aspects of health and safety.
You will work to advance the health and safety of all workers of Council and the workers of Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU) in conjunction with Council, through delivery of health, safety and wellbeing initiatives. You will have an in-depth knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, industry standards and legislative requirements and be experienced in ensuring an organisation’s health and Safety system, internal practices, policies and processes are aligned with legislation.
To succeed in this role you will need to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to collaborate with teams to ensure they engage to get the all-important buy in.
You will report directly to the Group Manager, Engagement and Culture, and lead our Health and Safety Advisor and Permit Officer, who will assist you in the day-to-day operations and roll-out of H&S initiatives.
We’re after an H&S professional with a qualification in Workplace Health and Safety or equivalent and 5 years’ relevant experience relating to the management of risks, incident investigation, health and safety, occupational wellbeing and leadership. A track record of reporting on, maintaining, and improving Health and Safety culture and initiatives is essential.
